Welcome back and hello to all the new followers of Small Ears! This week the newsletter has the pleasure to share with you the release of Ella Eliza : ‘Life Without Me’.
A little bit about her
Hailing from Germany but now based in West London, Ella Eliza is a dynamic force as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. Her journey took flight with her self-produced debut EP, 'INTROSPECTION', earning acclaim from tastemakers such as Wonderland, Dummy, and Earmilk, while also gaining traction on Spotify and BBC Music Introducing London.
Having already marked milestones like a sold-out headline at Notting Hill Arts Club, Ella has been making waves headlining venues such as The Grace and supporting acts such as Salt Ashes and Nonô in their London shows, all while catching the ear of Gemma Bradley on BBC Radio 1. Her music, a fusion of synth sounds and rich harmonies, delves into themes of self discovery, spirituality and empowerment, reflecting her own journey and adolescent narrative.

Alt pop singer-songwriter and producer Ella Eliza is set to captivate audiences with her latest single ‘Life Without Me’, a poignant exploration of the complexity of relationships and self-discovery. In an effort to break the mould with the visual counterpart to the song, Ella sought out multi-award winning LGBTQ+ Filmmaker Frankie Joe Gommon to create a music video reminiscent of a short film that offers a visually stunning and emotionally resonant journey into Ella Eliza's personal narrative.
In ‘Life Without Me’, produced by up and coming talent Jules Konieczny (Tom Grennan, Everything Everything, Alfie Jukes), Ella Eliza fearlessly delves into themes of love, loss, and her personal search for authenticity. The track showcases her signature blend of captivating melodies and honest lyricism, drawing listeners into a world where vulnerability is celebrated.
What sets ‘Life Without Me’ apart is its accompanying visual masterpiece, directed by visionary Frankie Joe Gommon. After winning a Royal Television Society Award last year for his smash debut LGBTQ+ film ‘Tell Tyler’, Frankie has become the one to watch in the London film scene. In this video, Frankie, who identifies as bisexual, has told a story of forbidden queer love, and a relationship's downfall. The video sees Ella’s world turn to chaos after falling for a girl she meets at work.
Speaking on the collaboration, Ella states:
When it comes to my songwriting I usually write tracks that aim to empower or uplift others. With this new song, I had just gone through a breakup, and found myself writing something deeply personal and a lot more self reflective. After speaking with Frankie about making this video, I decided that I was ready to open up about my sexuality for the first time, and let my audience in on some of the most vulnerable parts of myself. I think there's still a part of me that’s that 13 year old girl, who’s scared of showing so much of themselves. I am a lot more comfortable with who I am now, but I think the video reflects my past - which is the current reality for a lot of queer people. My biggest hope is that this song, and the video resonates with people who are still trapped in that place, and can inspire them to be their most authentic selves.
This collaboration with Ella Eliza marks Frankie’s return to queer storytelling, coming off the back of working on a film with Game of Thrones star, Tara Fitzgerald, last year.
Speaking on the video, Frankie adds:
The script for this music video came from my own personal struggles with self identity. And after chatting with Ella we figured out we had a lot of shared experiences. Which I think are universal among queer people. I’ve been a music lover my whole life, and I've been waiting patiently for the right artist to come along with the right story to tell- to kickstart a new career venture in music video. I couldn't be happier that me and Ella crossed paths when we did. There are a lot of layers in this short video, and Ella did a fantastic job of bringing the script alive. It was such a privilege to help tell her story, which in turn is my story, and probably many others.
‘Life Without Me’ marks a significant milestone in Ella Eliza's artistic journey, and a new venture into music video for Frankie Joe Gommon. Together, the pair of creatives are paving the way for queer storytelling, through powerful messaging and stunning visuals. The song and accompanying video is just the beginning, with Frankie looking to continue to tell meaningful stories with London’s most exciting new talent and Ella’s anticipated EP release on the horizon.
