Special Issue : Listen to the all new released "So Happy It Hurts" (EP) by LeyeT
a mixed bag of mostly good emotions… so good it actually hurts.
This week, Small Ears has the pleasure to share with you the release of the new EP "So Happy It Hurts" from LeyeT. You may have read a little bit of her story a few weeks ago because she is also part of the duo Balcony Weekend. As previously stated in the interview she also composes music on her own.
If you want to know more about her, here is a good description of her artist’s vision.
LeyeT (pronounced “light”) channels emotional vulnerability into alternative-pop songs with a solid heartbeat. From lyrical themes that inspire deeper thought, to her ambiguous name, it’s not enough to simply be, to live unchallenged. “In my songwriting and who I am as an artist, I want to provoke listeners to think about something,” LeyeT says. “A light does that. It helps someone see.”
Over the past few years, she’s garnered a solid foundation by amassing 15M+ streams across platforms, releasing three EPs ‘ My Mood Lately’, ‘thoughts’ and ‘more thoughts’, and collaborating with artists such as RAC , Le Youth and Dillistone.
Let’s talk about the freshly released EP

I hadn't specifically set out to write an EP. Instead, over the course of many writing sessions in general, I realized that I had an EP that had naturally came to fruition.
Something else rather unusual too with this EP is that just about every song on here was the result of a first time session with a new producer! I personally feel that this helped to give every song a special, lightning in a bottle, quality.
As stated by LeyeT, this EP feels like “driving with the windows down or dancing on the moon // being in your own world with someone you love”
Listening to the title track “So Happy it Hurts”
I had the chance to have an early peak at the title track “So Happy it Hurts”.
While listening and comparing it to the previous EP “My Mood Lately” you can instantaneously feel a shift in the artist’s vision of the world. Her “Mood Lately” feels more hopeful, filled with moments of joy as when you fall in love. This shift can be summarized on one of the first lines : “I got all I need, when I’m sitting here next to you”
Chorus lyrics:
You don’t gotta try so hard
or only use all clever words
Yeah, look at how we got this far
We can take it all as we are
You don’t gotta try so hard
I’m feeling so happy it hurts
Yeah, look at how we got this far
We can take it all as we are
In an email conversation, I asked her the feelings, composition and process behind this new release.
This song was a happy accident in that it was an unplanned session - after an artist canceled at the last minute, the producer and I decided to use the time to write on our own. The result was a song that I felt summarized the dream state of my EP as a whole.
For the first time, I’m releasing songs while in love - something that might seem like a go-to for others, but was never a prominent theme in my past releases. To be authentic in where I’m currently at, it felt natural to share this through my art. To me, the feeling of finding something that feels so right can be a mixed bag of mostly good emotions…so good it actually hurts.
